Student Finance Information:  Apply early; apply online . . . . .

The application service for students entering higher education from September 2009 is now open.  Many students leave their application for student finance until late on in the academic year, often only applying shortly before they are due to start their course.  As the assessment process can take time - due to the need for full identity and, in some cases, financial checks - students who apply later are not always guaranteed payments at the same time as those who have applied early.  The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

Students who would prefer not to apply online can call Student Finance England to request a paper application on 0845 300 50 90.  Should you have any queries regarding student finance, you may contact Mrs Curry, at the school,  in the first instance on 01268 474509.  There are several Powerpoint presentations available that may also assist you with your application.  To view the presentations click on the appropriate link:  Application Process; Core Presentation.

Bromfords Sixth Form Attendance Policy
As a member of Bromfords Sixth Form, all students are required to maintain full attendance, as stated in the Sixth Form Contract. All students are responsible for providing evidence for non-attendance and for informing the school of known absences. Year 12 students are not permitted to take home study time and should be on site during school hours. Students are permitted to organise an external activity as part of Recreational Studies or Community Service, in consultation with the Head of Sixth Form or their form tutor.

Self Certification of Absences
In recognition of the fact that students have chosen to continue their studies post 16 and in preparation for the workplace and Higher Education, we are introducing a policy of self certification for student absence of no longer than 3 days. This will mean that students will be permitted to authorise their own absences, in consultation with their form tutor. Reasons for absence will need to be detailed. The school reserves the right to challenge any reasons given and may contact parents for verification. If the absence exceeds 3 days, a parental note will be required. If the absence is due to illness, a doctor’s note will be required after 7 days.

Absences Known in Advance
If a student is aware of an absence in advance (for example a driving test or attendance at a family wedding) they should fill in an Authorised Absence Form, available from the Sixth Form Study Centre. This form should be filled in at least 3 days before the absence to allow for processing. The form should be returned to the student’s form tutor.

Holiday During Term Time
The taking of holiday in term time is detrimental to Advanced Level study and will disadvantage students. In the event of holiday being taken, students should apply for authorisation on the school holiday form available from the Sixth Form Study Centre at least two weeks before the intended absence.

Education Maintenance Allowance
Students claiming under the terms of the EMA contracts will have to fulfil all elements of Bromfords Sixth Form Attendance Policy, outlined above. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all evidence is provided for non-attendance. Failure to do so may result in payment being delayed or not being made.

Please note that the weekly payment of EMA based on attendance will be made a week in arrears. This will allow students time to provide necessary evidence of absence. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the school of any change in household circumstance that has an impact on the payment of EMA.
