Year 9 Options

At The Bromfords School, we believe every child deserves a curriculum that reflects their individual needs, interests, and ambitions. Our personalised curriculum allows students to build the skills and knowledge they need to reach their full potential and prepare confidently for future study. The booklet linked below explains the options process and is designed to support both students and parents in making informed choices about subjects that best suit their strengths and aspirations.

We encourage all students to set ambitious goals for life beyond Year 11. It is important to remember that the government requires young people to remain in education or training until the age of 18. This does not mean they must stay in school; after 16, students can choose from a range of pathways, including:

  • Full-time study at a school, college, or training provider
  • Combining full-time work or volunteering with part-time education or training
  • Pursuing an apprenticeship

In the early part of Year 9, students receive guidance to help them personalise their curriculum for GCSE study. All students follow a Core Curriculum, which includes English Language and Literature, Maths, Science, Personal Development, and Core Physical Education. In addition, they select three subjects from our Personalised Curriculum, which they will study from Year 10 onwards. Each chosen subject is taught for five hours per week, and GCSE examinations take place at the end of Year 11.

The Personalised Curriculum includes: Art, Business Studies, Computer Science, Dance, Drama, Food Nutrition, Film Studies, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, ICT, Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish from September 2027), Music, Photography, GCSE Physical Education, Product Design, Religious Education, and Textiles. To ensure a broad and balanced experience, students are expected to choose one subject from Group 1, one from Group 2, and one from either Group 3 or Group 4 (as outlined on page 2 of the booklet)

In addition, some students are strongly encouraged to study a Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish from September 2027) as part of their personalised curriculum. The curriculum for Years 10 and 11 has been carefully designed to maximise students’ learning, provide a wide range of opportunities, and support smooth progression into post‑16 education, training, or employment.
